Prolapse of the uterus is when the uterus falls from poor connective tissue (tendons, sinews, etc) health. Sometimes it slips so far down that it reaches into the vagina, and may be seen coming out the body. There are natural alternatives to a hysterectomy. From the natural perspective uterine prolapse is a sign of poor hormonal health or from chemical birth control methods, or could be weakened connective tissue from childbirth or poor nutrition.
Symptoms include vaginal pain, vaginal heaviness, pain during sexual intercourse, anal pain or pressure, low back pain, incontinence or difficulty urinating, urinary tract or bladder infections, and excessive vaginal discharge. Symptoms may worsen with activity but get better with bed rest.
Medical treatment of uterine prolapse: Estrogen supplements after menopause have been credited with helping to maintain strong pelvic muscles and ligaments, but there is no strong evidence that hormone replacement medicine after menopause prevents or treats a bladder or uterine prolapse. There are known health risks associated with hormone replacement, and in most women, the risks outweigh the benefits
Surgical treatments include tightening the weakened muscles without taking out the uterus, or hysterectomy which doctors usually recommend if symptoms are bothersome or if the uterus has dropped so far that it is coming through the vagina. Possible complications include urinary tract infections, ulcerations or infection, constipation, and hemorrhoids.
Natural therapies can often reverse the situation, but don’t rule out surgery. Limit heavy lifting and avoid unnecessary straining to have bowel movements. Avoid smoking so that you have a lower risk of chronic cough. Maintain a normal body weight through careful diet and exercise.
Exercises (called Kegel exercises) can help to strengthen the muscles of the pelvis. How to do Kegel exercises: Tighten your pelvic muscles as if you are trying to hold back urine. Hold the muscles tight for a few seconds and then release them. Repeat this exercise up to 10 times. Repeat the Kegel exercises up to four times a day.
A more intensive effort requires the use of a slant board and lying with the head nearer the ground and the legs up high.
Herbs for Uterine Prolapse
Herbs are plants valued for their specific strengthening/ tonifying properties.
Herb combination:
Dr. Christopher’s Hormonal Changease – herbal combination to help in hormonal balance.
Other herb combinations:
The following is a list of herbs used by various authors I have studied through the years. Success is very individual, but worth trying before a hysterectomy. This is a modified formula from Dr. Shook. It is to be taken internally.
3 parts Black walnut powder
1 part Black cohosh powder
2 parts Hawthorn berry powder
1 part Agrimony powder
1 part Irish moss powderAnother formula, used internally:
1 part Black walnut powder
1 part Burdock root powderHerb singles :
Use a single herb or a formula as a capsule or tea, internally and/or a vaginal douche of warm tea while lying on the slant board for 20 to 30 minutes each night. Add 20 drops of a tincture into 2 ounces of water and drink, or into 8 ounces of water for a douche.
Bayberry – astringent
Black Cohosh – hormone balancer
Black Walnut – thyroid, blood sugar, and parasites
Burdock root – acts also as a blood purifier
Cramp bark – relaxes, strengthens tissues
False unicorn tincture – uterine strengthener
Gravel root tincture – connective tissue
Motherwort tincture – hormones, heart
White oak bark – astringent
Yarrow – astringent, for bleeding
Uterine Tonic Herbs:
These are useful for a weak uterus that has poor circulation. They help tone, and may be aphrodisiac. Use as needed to warm the uterus and then back off. All herbs should be discontinued if pregnancy is suspected. These are all warming. These are useful for those women who are weak and pale with light periods.
Angelica tincture – warming, mucus-reducing, increases uterine strength. Immune stimulatory.
Damiana – strengthens the mind, harmonizes the menstruation.
Holy basil – warming, reduces mucus, tones the uterus. “It awakens joy and courage.”
Horsetail (Shave grass) – to reduce bloating and promote urination and strengthen the kidneys and bones, as well as the reproductive system.
Rosemary – not used when there is high blood pressure. Used for circulation, memory and concentration.
Sage tincture – a warming herb, dries up milk and reduces sweating. Endocrine stimulant. Long-life tonic.
Cell Salts to Help with Uterine Prolapse
To make a cell salt solution, put up to 10 tablets of each cell salt in a 16- to 24-ounce bottle; fill with water and swirl to dissolve tablets. Sip throughout the day.
The science of biochemistry shows us that certain minerals are responsible for connective tissue health. Calcium fluoride is important to connective tissue as an inorganic component for individual cellular integrity. This is not the fluoride that is put into water systems (a toxic substance), but is in the form of cell salts discovered by Dr. Schuessler (Germany) in the 1800s. This is the mineral used for when tissues become weak and saggy or when they become too hard. Cell salts are available in most health food stores.
Another cell salt to help in this process of restoring tissue integrity and elasticity is silica. It is a virtual component of tissues and their ability to rebuild and remove scarring. Together Calc fluor 6X and Silicea 6X can help the body to heal itself including both uterine and bladder prolapse. I have included these two cell salts with Kali phos 6X for nervous conditions and Ferrum phos 6X for inflammation from weakened tissues in a Cell Salt Solution for this problem.
#1 Calc Fluor 6X – connective tissue support
#4 Ferr phos 6X – inflammation from weakened tissues
#6 Kali phos 6X – nervous conditions
#12 Silicea 6X – tissue rebuilding and support
