Endometriosis happens when the endometrial lining (uterine lining) grows outside of the uterus, most frequently on the fallopian tubes and in the abdomen. It can grow almost anywhere in the body and sheds with the normal hormonal cycle.
Endometrial tissue can be of a light filmy composition and growth can be severe enough to be deeply imbedding fibrous scar tissue which restricts movement of organs in the abdominal cavity. It is estimated that it may afflict at least 10% of woman of child bearing years. Risk factors of endometriosis include early onset of menses, heavy bleeding, IUD usage, family history of endometriosis, poor sexual relationships or sexual abuse, poor diet, frequent genital infections.
Symptoms of endometriosis include pains (abdominal, back, vaginal, and uterine) and pain while having sex, infertility, painful menstruation, gas, bloating, and urinary irregularities. Causes of endometriosis include theories such as reverse flow periods, stress, and poor immune response – there is no consensus.  Medical response: diagnosis of endometriosis comes by ultrasound when women have pain or infertility. Symptoms of endometriosis are treated with NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) which may lead to gastrointestinal bleeding and other side effects.
The next step in treating endometriosis is to prescribe estrogen in the form of birth control pills. While somewhat effective for endometriosis, it creates numerous side effect risks. Next some treatments for endometriosis include medications that put a woman into semi-menopause state (risky). Surgery to remove scar tissue from endometriosis may be beneficial but not increase ability to conceive. Surgery has risks, especially when symptoms of endometriosis recur. The last ditch effort to treat endometriosis is a total hysterectomy – ovaries and all – which is very risky.
Natural treatments for endometriosis include a comprehensive evaluation with family history, abuse issues if any, self esteem, diet, physical symptoms, and emotional outlook. The body, mind and spirit are connected and need to be treated as such.
Endometriosis can be helped naturally with a combination of natural supplements. It may take several months to a couple of years for most symptoms to leave. Whether or not endometriosis can be cured is up to your body, but symptoms can usually be managed effectively and a woman can feel much better. Fertility issues may also have a better outcome. The woman must be dedicated to an ongoing lifestyle.
The natural strategy is to adjust lifestyle, dissolve scar tissue, reduce pain, improve immune function and most importantly to restore hormonal function and address emotional issues. Diet is vital as there must be no tobacco, and no more than one drink of alcohol, tea or coffee per week. There is no room for fast or processed foods.
Lifestyle should include a fairly non-stressful job and personal relationships; cultivate healthy relationships and nurturing friends. This may be the hardest challenge. Exercise regularly, mild to moderate movement.
Natural supplement essential on a daily basis includes fish oil, not the concentrated type, but salmon oil. 6,000 to 10,000 milligrams a day helps symptoms of endometriosis, is anti-inflammatory and cardio protective.
