Prebiotics & Probiotics For Your Gut Health

Last year I started experiencing the odd bout of anxiety.  This was a particularly foreign feeling to me, so I had a sense that something in my body wasn’t quite right.  Around the same time, I observed both digestive issues (bloating, general discomfort) and brain fog/memory loss and was subsequently tested for a Candida overgrowth.  Testing positive I was put on a diet to improve my gut health and each of the above symptoms disappeared, including the anxiety.

It’s fascinating isn’t it, how our bodies have a way of telling us exactly what we need to know?

Is it time then to consider your own gut health?

Your gut health is critical!

The health of your gut is extremely important to your overall well-being.  It’s a place where a whole lot is going on, and rightly so – it has a profound impact on far more than how much dessert you can fit in after dinner.  So much so in fact that the gut is often referred to as the “second brain“.

This is because it’s responsible for some very critical functions in your digestive and immune systems.  The presence of what’s called “good bacteria” actually enhance your health, greatly improving things like your hormone regulation, nutrient absorption, digestion, immune system strength and your body’s ability to eliminate toxins.

As we now know, the gut also influences your mental health.  The gut contains an Enteric Nervous System that communicates with your Central Nervous System, which triggers mood changes.  It means depression, anxiety, memory loss, and other cognitive functions can all be caused by your gut.

All disease begins in the gut.
– Hippocrates.

Don’t you find that refreshing?

The notion that by simply changing what you put on the end of your fork (or spoon) each day you can better your mental health?

The good news is that it’s quite easy to maintain a healthy gut and keep all of these bodily functions in tip-top shape.

The answer?  Increase your levels of good bacteria.
How do you do that?  With Probiotics.

What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are microorganisms found in bacteria, yeast, and fungi that keep your digestive system happy and running at its best.  It’s the good bacteria I’ve been talking about that your gut needs to keep everything running smoothly.

If you’ve ever seen an advertisement for yogurt where they talk about how much good bacteria it contains, they’re talking about Probiotics.  These “living” bacteria are generally found in cultured or fermented foods.  Apart from yogurt, this includes things like buttermilk, aged cheeses, sourdough bread, miso, tempeh, and the drink Kombucha.

Next time you look at a tub of yogurt, look out for guys like Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium Lactis – they’re your friendly neighborhood Probiotics.

Using Probiotics helps you to:

  • Boost your body’s immune system by protecting it against harmful bacteria
  • Assist you to digest and process your food without bloating or gas
  • Restore your body’s natural balance after a stint on antibiotics, which tend to kill a lot of good bacteria in your system
  • Help your body absorb all the nutrients and good stuff it needs from what you eat

To improve your gut health, consume Probiotic foods like the above 1-2 times a day, and/or take a daily supplement.  You should start to see an improvement in a week or two.

What About Prebiotics?

Prebiotics, on the other hand, are non-digestible food fibers found in specific foods that give good bacteria (like those Probiotics) a helping hand to be more effective.

If you imagine Probiotics are plants, then Prebiotics are the soil.  They provide a stimulating environment that helps the good bacteria grow and have a bigger impact on your digestive tract.  For Probiotics to do their thing, they need a healthy level of Prebiotics around to feed them.

Prebiotic foods are a little easier to include in a healthy diet than Probiotic foods (in my opinion), so to improve your gut health I would recommend trying to incorporate them into your eating naturally, before looking at supplements. Combining Probiotic and Prebiotic-rich foods in your diet can allay many mental and physical health-related issues and support your health and well-being long-term.  Perhaps this is the prompt you need to make your gut health a priority.

Here is a list of foods that are rich in Prebiotic goodness:

Garlic

Jerusalem artichokes

Skin of apples

Onions, leeks, and celery

Legumes

Chicory Root

Rye, barley and whole oats

Natural Remedies for Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease and the most common form of arthritis affecting most people over the age of 50! It is the wearing away of cartilage with inflammation.

Arthritis in BackSymptoms of osteo arthrits include joint inflammation which develops pain, stiffness associated with inflammation; injuries or over-use causing inflammation; stiffening with swelling; joints may deform, or bony growths may appear in or around the joints. Several of these symptoms may happen together, or individually.

The causes are often a diet rich in animal fats, sugars, salts, etc. Other causes may include the use of tobacco, alcohol, coffee, injuries, and stress.

Modern medicine treats arthritic conditions by attempting to contain the symptoms using toxic drugs that bring about side effects. The drug companies have designed medications to be used for a lifetime. Western medicine considers all chronic conditions to be irreversible. This view is so prevalent that most people believe the fallacy. Don’t be fooled into thinking there is only one way.

Prescription medications may interfere with the action of homeopathic treatment. They hamper or stop the action of the homeopathic remedy in the body. Steroids such as prednisone are the most addicting and the hardest to remove. Medications can only be removed or altered with a physician’s advice. As your body is regulated under the influence of drugs, slowly wean off medications, allowing for an easier transition.

Why homeopathy does so well for Arthritis
Homeopathic treatment of Arthritis has been proven successful for over 200 years. Homeopathic remedies are safe for anyone and can be used along with any other treatments or medications. They may be used during pregnancy, and while nursing.

Treating arthritic symptoms with homeopathics is best used in conjunction with a clean and nutritious diet. The Mucusless Diet is a good guide to follow. Always remember to eliminate tobacco, alcohol, coffee, soda pop, and dairy products.

Pain is an indication of an energy blockage (the energy doesn’t move through and organ or system in the way nature intended it. Remove the blockage, and the pain will go away permanently. On the other hand, if joint damage is too far gone the body cannot repair itself. Through the natural remedies pain can be eliminated either through continued treatment, or may go away permanently even though the joint is damaged. With severe damage, pain may not be the only factor, but joint mobility will.

More stubborn cases can only be positively affected by finding a person’s homeopathic “constitutional” remedy, often determined by an experienced Homeopath. Homeopathic remedies are very specific in their action and can be used for acute and chronic conditions.

Natural Remedies to Help Lyme Disease

Lyme disease comes from tick bites. Symptoms include a circular rash within 30 days of the tick bite which can reach up to 12 inches across. Symptoms may be like the flu with aches, fever, chills and headaches, with possible swollen lymph nodes. The second phase can have loss of facial muscle tone (sagging), stiff neck, and shifting symptoms (moving from part to part). The third stage is chronic arthritic-like condition of the large joints, especially the knees.

Modern medicine can effectively treat the initial bacterial assault (first stage) with antibiotics. The next stages, however, there are no effective medical treatments. Other ineffective treatments may include steroids which are suppressive and toxic.

The natural perspective of Lyme’s is first diagnosing that it is really what you think. After the initial bacterial assault with its damage, the body is compromised and the immune system must be reset. This is done with systemic herbs, a cell salt solution and an appropriate homeopathic. The stage three effects are no longer a bacterial problem, therefore antibiotics won’t help.
