Fibromyalgia (FMS) is a soft tissue musculoskeletal syndrome that is similar to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It differs from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) in that the primary symptom of fatigue that is experienced by CFS patients is replaced with musculo-skeletal pain in fibromyalgia patients.
90% of fibromyalgia patients are women, usually aged 20-60 (most commonly 45 to 55). Although Fibromyalgia is less prevalent in men, men experience more severe symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Western medicine is beginning to acknowledge Fibromyalgia. The diagnosis often comes after all other diagnoses are exhausted.
The theories of cause are all over the place, with one common theory; that it stems from some physical trauma. Hypothyroidism may be a possible precipitating factor (and possibly a direct cause) of Fibromyalgia. Dr. Robin Murphy, N.D., my mentor, has proposed that it is a condition based upon emotional issues with males. It makes sense to me, as most sufferers are women and practically every man I have seen for Fibromyalgia has been abused by some male in their life. The few exceptions are likely physical trauma.
Case in point: Some time ago a woman called me about Fibromyalgia, as it started with an abusive second marriage. She divorced him and married a fine loving man, but the symptoms persisted. She had not resolved her issues with the abusive marriage. Often, emotional issues can affect our physical body in the form of a condition or disease. This particular condition is sometimes mistaken for or associated with Epstein-Barr Syndrome or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Major symptoms include muscular pain, depression, anxiety, severe exhaustion, memory, insomnia, digestive problems, blood sugar problems and urinary problems. Here are some descriptions:
Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the minor symptoms of Fibromyalgia. 70% of patients experience irritable bowel syndrome which is characterized by alternating diarrhea and constipation, intestinal cramps, flatulence and nausea.
Generalized fatigue is one of the minor symptoms of Fibromyalgia. 85% of patients experience overwhelming tiredness accompanied by an inability to perform physical tasks. It may occur without any precipitating events.
Anxiety is one of the minor symptoms of Fibromyalgia (62% experience), along with irritability and over-concern without any specific precipitating events causing these feelings.
Chronic headache or migraine is one of the minor symptoms of Fibromyalgia (approx. 70% experience).
Natural solutions include using supplements and good dietary nutrition for reducing stress and muscular pain. It is important to find a homeopathic remedy to help you deal with the emotional issues that keep the pain intact.
For a little extra help, use the following supplements that may help with or prevent symptoms of Fibromyalgia:
Vitex helps to increase progesterone which may alleviate some cases of Fibromyalgia (according to anecdotal reports).
Magnesium deficiency within muscle fibers is speculated to be a factor in the development of Fibromyalgia. Daily supplementation of 300 – 600 mg of magnesium, especially from the Magnesium malate form, may result in significant improvements in the number of tender points in Fibromyalgia patients (supposedly from the malic acid content of magnesium malate, rather than the magnesium content).
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) has anti-inflammatory affects and is speculated to be a useful treatment for Fibromyalgia.
